The BMW Concept Active Tourer, a plug-in hybrid version of the BMW 1-Series GT, debuted at the Paris Motor Show today to showcase future brand designs.
It features a 1.5-liter three-cylinder twin-turbo gas engine that the automaker says will perform comparably to many six-cylinder powerplants. Between the electric motors and small gas engine, BMW says the system produces 190 hp and can reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in less than eight seconds.
Beyond acceleration, which is impressive for such a small engine but sluggish overall, the car can also travel almost 19 miles on pure electric power. Like other plug-in hybrid on the market, it will also be capable of charging through a 120-watt outlet with a level 1 charger.
Aside from the drivetrain, BMW is previewing the future of its luxury compact segment with the car’s cabin. Several features preview what the brand will likely bring in future cars. For example, the car’s panoramic glass roof uses suspended particle technology to control how much light comes through the glass at the touch of a button. It’s a feature similar to what the world first saw in cars from now-defunct Maybach, but trickled into Mercedes-Benz.
Rear seat passengers also enjoy a way to fix laptops and other portable devices to the rear of the front seats to use during travel. FInally, the car features mobile integration through BMW’s ConnectedDrive – a system that integrates mobile devices, apps and more.
